Making a choice of technology will impact a software vendor’s future in multiple different ways. The choice of technology will impact the ecosystem that the software vendor creates its partner network and it could also impact market segmentation and industry vertical that the company is going to address with its solution.

Organizations such as Microsoft has made a decision to focus on cloud solutions with the expectation that its partner network will also follow this decision with different types of solutions that will build on top of Microsoft cloud solutions such as Business Productivity Online Suite from Microsoft and Windows Azure.

The question that each software vendor has is how to utilize these new Microsoft cloud solutions and what type of impact it has on the entire company including developers and architects. A software vendor (ISV) has multiple questions that needs to be answered to such as:

• Does my development environment support cloud-based architectures and platforms?
• Do we have to re-train our developers to take advantage of these new technologies?
• Do we have enough information to be able to innovate new solutions using cloud infrastructure?
• How does the new development of cloud solution change the life-cycle model of our development and do we know how each phase in the development process impacts the delivery of the solution?
• Do we have a good understanding how development to cloud environment differs from the traditional software development in on-premise solutions?
